Biking for the Climate
Replace short car trips with bike trips to reduce your impact on the environment!

Transportation and the Environment
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2024, 28% of emissions came from transportation, the largest contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
In 2021, the U.S. Office of Energy reported that 52% of all trips in the U.S. were under three miles. In Sacramento, the average travel trip is 4 miles; 80% of all trips were made by autos.
On average, you reduce your carbon emissions from transportation by 67-75% when you choose a bike over a car just once a day.
We are in a climate crisis and everything we can do to reduce carbon emissions is an important step to reducing the impact. Riding a bike instead of driving a car, if you can, is a low-cost enjoyable way to do your part.
In 2021, the mayor’s office created the Office of Climate Action & Sustainability to develop climate action and sustainability initiatives for Sacramento. In the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (PDF), strategies are included to make Sacramento more walkable and bikeable.

How SABA Advocates for the Environment
SABA works to make bicycle riding safer and more efficient in the Sacramento region by advocating for infrastructure improvements and educating cyclists how to navigate through the city. We provide free repair clinics and free bikes and educate residents how to choose and safely ride e-bikes.
Modeshift
SABA tries to get more people to choose a bicycle for everyday trips that are 4 miles or less. Mode share refers to the percentage of people using a specific type of transportation (like walking, biking, driving, or public transit) out of the total number of trips taken. Current mode share in Sacramento is 1% cycling, 2% walking, and 1% public transit.
